The rhythm of school teaches us to make the most of these long, hot days. It’s summer! Whoo hoo! If you’re a teacher, though, you’re probably scrambling to balance that whoo-hoo with a healthy dose of deferred maintenance (doctors, dentists, home repair, etc)— a long list of have-tos and a long list of want-tos— and you may feel like you’re racing from one thing to the next.
One of the things I tell prospective students is that we all have a limited number of days on the planet and that we don’t want to be complicit in wasting any of yours. We don’t want you to feel like you’re jumping through hoops or gutting your way through grad school. We want the experience to be just the right mix of joy, inspiration, aspiration, and hard work— to make the most of the experience. Simply put, to take their time.

Take. Your. Time.
Take: to claim
Your: belonging to you
Time: the way we measure our (unpredictably defined) existence
This month, I’m not going to share a bunch of resources. I want to encourage you to take your July. Balance your “need to” with your “want to,” intentionally, remember that the time you’re spending belongs to you. Take it, give it, spend it, waste it — not just this July, but every day. Make the most of it.
It’s your time. Take it.
