I&#8217;ve spent time with books,\u00a0articles, tools, newsletters, photos, challenges (written by hand or typed on electric typewriters!), correspondence, and meeting minutes from the days before the internet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Each references\u00a0the best thinking of the day, the emergent research around learning, technology, nature, neuroscience, and collaboration, filled with citations-\u00a0educators and authors who were thinking, observing, connecting, and\u00a0exploring\u2014\u00a0documenting what they were learning so that others could stand on their shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Four decades of teachers turning theory into practice, creating tools and strategies that teachers could use on Tuesday, rooted in the big ideas of the day. Designing challenges that bridged\u00a0the\u00a0ever-evolving needs of communities and the things we most wanted our students to know and do, while also respecting the goals and needs of the teacher as a co-learner.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"382\" src=\"https:\/\/center.antioch.edu\/csc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/10\/unnamed-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-439 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/center.antioch.edu\/csc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/10\/unnamed-2.png 610w, https:\/\/center.antioch.edu\/csc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/10\/unnamed-2-300x188.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The whole thing has taken a very\u00a0<em><strong>If You Give a Mouse a Cookie<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0sort of turn, as I find myself revisiting the voices that underpinned the\u00a0work in 1986, 1993, 2001, and 2015. Some are familiar and some are new, and (as often happens at this stage of my life,) I\u00a0<strong>think<\/strong>\u00a0some are new until I start reading, only to remember that they&#8217;re actually familiar.\u00a0<br><br><em>Or, as\u00a0Ralph Waldo Emerson mused,<strong>&#8220;I cannot remember the books I&#8217;ve read any more than the meals I have eaten; even so, they have made me&#8221; &#8211;<\/strong><\/em><br><br>Last month, I asked you to think about the people who shaped you into the educator you are today. I&#8217;m a big fan of reflection, so why not repeat the exercise? What do you recall about the books that\u00a0made you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>What did they teach you?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>How do you aspire to embody\u00a0them?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Why were they important to you?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>What if you\u2019d never crossed paths with them?<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s only about the professional books. I believe that we&#8217;re better teachers for the time we&#8217;ve spent&nbsp;with Pip, Katniss, Starr, Gatsby, Esperanza, Bilbo, and Percy. This month, I&#8217;m sharing my favorites- the books that made me- along with some lists that can help you find your new favorite read (or your new favorite&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/antioch.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=54a75c032424f9199b4694465&amp;id=9cb892fc2e&amp;e=2a47076dd7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">listen<\/a>!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It only seems fair that I share the books that came to mind for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/share.google\/Oozdq4B9Vk6or2n2W\"><strong>900 Shows a Year\u2014Stuart Palonsky &#8211; <\/strong><\/a>Taught me that teaching is about more than knowing your content and caring about kids<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/antioch.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=54a75c032424f9199b4694465&amp;id=6e50c9d167&amp;e=2a47076dd7\"><strong>Inside Out: Developmental Strategies for Teaching Writing<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/antioch.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=54a75c032424f9199b4694465&amp;id=6e50c9d167&amp;e=2a47076dd7\">(2nd Ed) \u2014Kirby and\u00a0 Liner-<\/a> Gave me a whole new way of thinking about writing- as a teacher and as a writer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/antioch.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=54a75c032424f9199b4694465&amp;id=7193832ecc&amp;e=2a47076dd7\"><strong>Horace&#8217;s Compromise<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/antioch.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=54a75c032424f9199b4694465&amp;id=7193832ecc&amp;e=2a47076dd7\">\u2014 Ted Sizer-<\/a> Got me started thinking about how schools could be different (I was in 12th grade when I read it!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/antioch.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=54a75c032424f9199b4694465&amp;id=7c30008032&amp;e=2a47076dd7\"><strong>The Power of Their Ideas<\/strong>\u2014Deborah Meier-<\/a> Reminded me that kids know a lot more than we give them credit for.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/antioch.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=54a75c032424f9199b4694465&amp;id=1e73e2bc6a&amp;e=2a47076dd7\"><strong>Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014Beverly Daniel Tatum-<\/a> Where do I start? I&#8217;m a white lady now and I was a white girl who grew up with white people. This book was the first of many that helped me understand what that meant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/antioch.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=54a75c032424f9199b4694465&amp;id=edf51339fc&amp;e=2a47076dd7\"><strong>Teaching As a Subversive Activity\u2014<\/strong>Neil Postman-<\/a> I came to this one later than I wish I had, but it&#8217;s probably more important now than it was when it was published.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/antioch.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=54a75c032424f9199b4694465&amp;id=0b72154a1a&amp;e=2a47076dd7\"><strong>Jacob Have I Loved<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/antioch.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=54a75c032424f9199b4694465&amp;id=0b72154a1a&amp;e=2a47076dd7\">\u2014Katherine Paterson-<\/a> Perspective, perspective, perspective.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/antioch.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=54a75c032424f9199b4694465&amp;id=51d0248fb3&amp;e=2a47076dd7\"><strong>True and False: Heresy and Common Sense for the Actor<\/strong>\u2014David Mamet-<\/a> Be present. Be authentic. Respond to what&#8217;s actually happening, not what you think or expect (or fear) is happening.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/antioch.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=54a75c032424f9199b4694465&amp;id=25d293d9ee&amp;e=2a47076dd7\"><strong>The Princess Bride<\/strong>\u2014 William Goldman-<\/a> Being silly and having fun can be serious undertakings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d love to hear from you.
