I was still\u00a0new-ish in my role at Antioch (do we ever stop feeling like new-ish teachers?)\u00a0and I felt like I was always playing catch-up. There were always new studies to read andnew ideas and voices to explore\u2014 some really new and others just new to me\u2014 so the idea that the most important voice I could explore was my own?\u00a0\u00a0If I&#8217;m teaching who I am\u2014 if good teaching comes from self-knowledge\u2014\u00a0then all of the content knowledge in the world is only going to get me partway there.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, that felt refreshing in a &#8220;drink cold water after finishing an Altoid&#8221; kind of way. Not a particularly\u00a0<em><strong>refreshing<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0kind of refreshing\u2014 more a\u00a0jarring &#8220;that was unexpected&#8221; kind of feeling. Almost two decades later, I appreciate the wake-up call.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0I needed to spend as much time figuring out who I was as I was spending trying to keep up to date with the research.<\/strong><br><br>This month, I&#8217;m thinking about the concept\u00a0of &#8220;<strong>Center<em>&#8211;\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em>the point from which an activity or process is directed, or on which it is focused<\/em>.<strong>&#8220;<\/strong>\u00a0Getting- and staying- clear on my Center,\u00a0my true North, my core values and beliefs as a human being, helps me get and stay clear on my core values and beliefs as an educator. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/compote.slate.com\/images\/a56fc56a-e021-44d2-8502-8d4c168ded6b.jpeg?crop=5616%2C3744%2Cx0%2Cy0&amp;width=1440\" alt=\"\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.50004744733346;width:401px;height:auto\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2023\/06\/ted-lasso-finale-season-3-defense-depression.html<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I value optimism, and I believe that we all have the capacity to learn from our mistakes, or in the wise words of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=ted+lasso+judgement+quote&amp;oq=ted+lasso+jud&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqBwgAEAAYgAQyBwgAEAAYgAQyBggBEEUYOTIHCAIQABiABDIHCAMQABiABDIHCAQQABiABDIHCAUQABiABDIHCAYQABiABDIHCAcQABiABDIHCAgQABiABDIHCAkQABiABNIBCDM2ODBqMGo3qAIAsAIA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&amp;vld=cid:9c5adde2,vid:lBC9QOdN1TU,st:0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ted Lasso<\/a>, &#8220;<em><strong>I hope either all of us or none of us are judged by the actions of our weakest moments. But rather, by the strength we show, when and if we&#8217;re ever given a second chance.<\/strong><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0<br><br>I value courage and knowledge, and I believe that being afraid is usually a sign that we&#8217;re about to learn something important, if we&#8217;re only brave enough to step into it. (Not to mention the great things we&#8217;re doing for our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7381101\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anterior Mid-Cingulate Cortex<\/a>!)<br><br>February is short, but it&#8217;s longer\u00a0than\u00a0it appears to be. Here in New England, it&#8217;s a slushy, wet, unpredictable month, which makes it an excellent month to figure out\u00a0who you are- who you&#8217;re teaching- before we move on.<br><br>I&#8217;m sharing some resources that may help, but the most important resource on this topic is\u00a0<strong>YOU<\/strong>. Ask yourself what you believe, what you value\/ Just that. No focusing on what you want to do next, who you wish you were, or where you think you&#8217;ve gone wrong or fallen short.
